Helsinki’s Transport: A Service Design Success Story
Internship in Ireland
Carlotta Schaal
As an international tutor and a fan of travelling, going abroad was always part of my plan. Since April, I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of New Graphic and experience the traditional arts, music and sports of Dublin and Ireland. In Germany, I studied Colour Design at HAWK Hildesheim with an emphasis on colour concepts, materials, and trends for six semesters before spending my second-to-last semester at this internship.
Why not somewhere warmer?
I had visited Dublin once before and was impressed by both the historic parts of the city and the endless pubs. Living here has been similar; the people I’ve met have been welcoming, outgoing, and always up for small talk. They also share the German love for both beer and apple cider. Travelling around the country and working on different projects, I developed a growing fascination for the Irish language (working with Udaras an gaeltachta has been particularly enjoyable) and live music. I even saw a Hurling match at Croke Park.
During my research, I found the Irish more experimental and free in their web design compared to Germany, which made me curious about their approach to Graphic, Interior, and Colour Design.
Working in the studio
With projects ranging from Web Design to Graphic Design and Wayfinding, I’ve been able to use the skills I was taught in college while learning new processes and programs like Figma and experiencing a typical workday in a design studio.
The majority of my work focuses on digital spaces, so I’m gaining the most insight. I am also expanding my experience with colour by understanding the necessary differences between analogue and digital colour systems and their usage.
Topics like Sustainability and Accessibility, which have been part of almost every project here, translate into all design aspects and will be an important part of my studies and work going forward.
In contrast to much of the digital work, Wayfinding and Signage fit well into the material side of my degree. Initially unaware of Wayfinding, I quickly developed an appreciation for the detail in typography and well-placed signs.
I am very grateful for the different understanding of design I have gained and the opportunity to get to know the country and meet people during my time here. This experience is a significant step toward my future after my degree and a huge privilege.
I’ll be happy to return and visit Dublin and New Graphic.
