Codema, Dublin’s Energy Agency, is committed to transforming how energy is produced and used locally. At the outset of this project, we focused on three key objectives:
- A Low-Carbon Website – A sustainable, low-energy platform.
- Animating Their Brand – A dynamic, engaging online presence.
- Accessible & Dynamic – A clear, user-friendly design for all.
Beyond this, we aimed to position Codema as an innovative leader in Dublin’s transition to a fossil fuel-free future, showcasing their core values, emissions reduction efforts, and real-world impact on the city’s residents.

A Low-Carbon Website
The new website aligns with Codema’s commitment to sustainability and prioritises energy efficiency and low data usage. By adopting a low-carbon approach, the new homepage achieves an A rating from the Website Carbon Calculator, making it cleaner than 91% of all web pages globally. This is a significant improvement from the old website, which had a D rating, meaning it was more carbon-intensive than 53% of all websites.
The new site is also hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of Ireland’s green hosting providers. Amazon also plays a key role in Codema’s Tallaght District Heating Scheme. Waste heat from a nearby Amazon data centre is used to supply heat to the network, and during normal operation, this waste heat meets 100% of the district’s demand.

Animating Their Brand
One of the key challenges was translating Codema’s recent brand refresh into a seamless digital experience. We reviewed the new brand guidelines, focusing on accessibility and how the colour palette would perform in a web context. Instead of relying on standard monochrome greys for the user interface, we introduced tints of dark green from the new colour scheme. This helped to achieve a richer and more unified user interface.

Accessible & Dynamic
Key goals of the project included:
- Accessibility and Universal Design: A key priority was to design a site that is accessible to all users and easy to navigate, with clear, well-organised information about who Codema is, its areas of expertise, and the significant work it does.
- Dynamic and Flexible Templates: In order for the site to be adaptive, we focused on creating dynamic, flexible templates withrepurposable components. These allow Codema to easily update and reuse elements across the site, ensuring consistency while supporting future content needs.
